The Barking Dog Does Not Need to Rule Your Life
How to stop dogs barking is a common question. When you have a problem with the barking dog, the first place to look is really not the dog itself, but rather it is yourself. You need to first ask yourself—what are YOU doing that is contributing to this problem to be worse? When you change your behavior you will find the barking dog will begin to change as well.
When your dog begins to bark, refrain from yelling, this only makes the problem worse. The dog is doing what comes natural. When you respond to the barking that way, the dog has gotten your attention and considers it reward enough. Thereby you are teaching your dog to BE the barking dog! You have encouraged the behavior, even though you think you are trying to discourage it. T
The are other actions that encourage the barking as well. If you get tense when leaving the house expecting your dog to bark, the dog will sense that and the barking will increase in response to your attitude. Dogs are very smart and can pick up on your attitude. Because of that, the dog senses that anxiety within you and it causes a deeper problem within the dog itself. So you need to be careful about how you respond at this particular time.
The Barking Dog can be Helped with a Bark Collar
Dog bark collars can often be a help to interrupt the barking pattern with dogs. But the very purpose of the bark collar is not to stop the barking completely on its own. It is not the answer to every barking problem. What does it do? It causes the dog to stop for a moment and lose its focus on whatever it is that it is barking about. It is at that moment that you can step in and speak to the dog and let it know that you want it to stop.
